HIDDEN BEAUTY

The Anemones of Cornwall and Devon

This project is an opportunity to witness the unearthly, weird, and wonderful anemones that inhabit the rockpools of Southwest England. ‘Hidden Beauty’ encourages a closer, more curious engagement with these delicate and often misunderstood creatures. Anyone can see this beauty for themselves if they look close enough.

Anemones in the UK are often seen as red or brown, jelly-like blobs dotted among the rocks in the intertidal zone. Poked and prodded, they are overlooked, nowhere near as interesting as crabs and fish, which you can catch and admire in a bucket. Yet, beneath their seemingly mundane appearance lies a fascinating world of colour, texture, and movement waiting to be discovered. Named after and resembling flowers, these extraordinary species are predatory marine invertebrates and are, in fact, closely related to corals and jellyfish. These creatures offer an extraordinary glimpse into the hidden richness of our marine ecosystems.
